Chesapeake Bay Garden Club members visited Northumberland Elementary School first graders on April 13 to present their Ready Set Grow program.
Club members shared their knowledge of plants and seeds, reported publicist Karen Luzuriaga. They explained how plants provide food.
To everyone’s amazement, these students were already well informed on the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to grow, said Luzuriaga.
During the second part of the program, students planted marigold and zinnia seeds. The students will watch them grow into small plants in their classrooms, she said.
After the plants mature, some will be planted in the side garden on the school property. One of their plants will be taken home to enjoy. When these students return to school in the fall as second graders, they will witness a beautiful garden of zinnias and marigolds, said Luzuriaga.
