Cold front dumps up to 10 inches of rain

KILMARNOCK—Motorists were met with high water and dangerous travel conditions on dozens of area roads over the weekend after a cold front moved across the state and dumped up to 10 inches of rain in some parts of the lower Northern Neck, according to Terrence McGregor, Lancaster County’s chief of emergency services.

“We had a number of roads where the ditches couldn’t handle the water — Harris Road, Ocran, Windmill Point, Morattico. The list is long,” said McGregor. So many roads were under water that the Virginia Department of Transportation actually “ran out of high water signs,” he added.

“Some of these showers just parked themselves and kind of settled in one spot and it just rained and rained and rained, which made for the rainfall total differences,” said McGregor…
