Entomologist to speak about ticks and tick-borne diseases

The Northern Neck Master Gardeners will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at the Transportation Museum Building, Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville.

Virginia Department of Health entomologist Dr. David Gaines will present “Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases.”

Ticks in the Northern Neck pose a variety of health-related concerns. Blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, spread Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis, a bacterial illness that causes flu-like symptoms, reported Virginia Cooperative Extension agent William A. Bell. Lone star ticks and dog ticks spread ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Researchers have found a link between lone star tick bites and the development of red meat allergies.
