Wolfson snags winning reception for Christchurch in season opener

The Seahorses football team defeated Nansemond Suffolk Academy, 24-20, in a season home opener at Christchurch School on Saturday, September 7.

Seniors Jaylen Wood and Kobe Scales carried the Seahorse offense to a victory, reported communications associate Jennifer Homer.

Christchurch led the game 17-7 going into the second half, but the Saints pulled in front in the third quarter by scoring twice. Facing a 20-17 deficit in the fourth quarter, the Seahorses went on a 70-yard drive to take a four-point lead, 24-20. The Seahorses held the lead when Wood made a crucial tackle on a fourth-down pass completion to seal the deal for Christchurch.

Wood rushed for a TD and passed for a TD. Scales ran over and through the Saints all afternoon. Junior Rock Wolfson of Kilmarnock provided the game winning touchdown reception and numerous tackles to help the cause. Junior kicker Jack Barker went 3 for 3 on PAT kicks and tallied the first points of the season with a 32-yard field goal on the Seahorses first drive. Junior Brandan Bowers scored on a two-yard plunge in the second quarter.

The first game was sprinkled with errors on both sides of the ball but coach Ed Homer was excited to see the Seahorses return to their brand of hard-hitting football at Christchurch.

The Seahorses travel to Front Royal this weekend to face the Yellowjackets of Randolph-Macon Academy.
