Months of perseverance, hard work and creative thinking have begun bearing fruit as the team at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock, continues to rebuild after a tornado spawned by Hurricane Isaias caused extensive damage last summer.
Early on August 4, 2020, the main building—which houses the tasting room, event room, production facility and wine cellar—suffered significant structural damage to the roof, porches and chimney.
Next to it, owners Paul and Katie Krop’s office and apartment, and the winery’s garage and shed also were hit. Approximately two acres of vines were damaged.
It had already been a hard-luck year. COVID-19-related restrictions temporarily closed the winery. Meanwhile, a late spring frost and a wet summer resulted in a low-yield grape harvest throughout Virginia, said marketing manager Monique MacEachin.
As Marianne Krop, Paul’s sister, rushed in to check on the vineyard’s dogs, winery staff arrived to see how they could help. Unexpectedly and unprompted, neighbors also came to see what they could do…
