Decades of bargain and treasure hunting will end as Jean’s Bargain Center closes

Since 1978, shoppers have come to rely on Jean’s Bargain Center to find second-hand treasures. If that doesn’t seem all that long ago, consider that it was also the year that Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta stared in “Grease” and Laverne & Shirley was the top rated television show in the nation.

When Jean Smith humbly opened Jean’s in the basement of her home, it was one of the first consignment and resale shops in the Northern Neck. Now, nearly 50 years later, there are a number of such stores dotting the landscape but Jean’s has been a constant; a testament to the lasting connections Jean and her daughter, Donna Sebra, have made with consignment vendors and shoppers in the area.

But as they say, all good things must come to an end. The doors will be closing….
