911 is more than just a call for help

LANCASTER—For those who have to call 911 for help in Lancaster County, new technology is now in place to make that call more effective, and in some cases safer, according to Heather Jenkins, communications director for Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the first in the area to offer the service.

The benefits of Prepared Live and RapidSOS, which went live this month, begin as soon as a call comes in. The system can immediately pinpoint a caller’s location, which is especially important if they are unable to do so because of a medical condition, are unfamiliar with their location, or cannot speak out of safety concerns.

Once connected, the service also allows dispatch operators to take control….
