Lancaster commission pauses on short-term rental regulations

LANCASTER—After being directed by the board of supervisors to review short-term rental (STR) regulations and spending two months in discussions, the Lancaster planning commission on Thursday, January 19, voted 5-0 to revisit the proposed regulations and accompanying zoning articles following a lengthy public hearing.

David Chupp, Tom Richardson, Tara Booth, Latoy Davenport and Glendon Pinn voted in favor, Steve Sorenson and Ty Brent were absent. County administrator Don Gill said with additional changes, the commission should hold another hearing before the matter moves on to the board for an additional hearing and vote.

Gill said the review was prompted by “numerous complaints and phone calls” regarding STRs. During the October and November meetings, the commission reviewed STR ordinances from surrounding localities. Currently, the only regulations within the county are the STR registry and transient occupancy tax ordinances which have been on the books since 2018.

STRs continue to be a hot topic for residents as evidenced by the full courtroom….
