The Rappahannock Record is conducting written interviews with candidates in contested races for local office in the November 7 election. Candidates for Lancaster County Clerk of Circuit Court, Latunya Lee and Diane Mumford, were asked the same four questions. Their responses are in alphabetical order and unedited for content.
1 • What experience do you have that qualifies you for the position of Clerk of the Circuit Court?

Lee: With over two decades of experience, the majority of which was spent in Lancaster County, I have developed a deep understanding of the inner workings of various county Clerk’s offices. Recently, I spent two years in Middlesex County, further expanding my knowledge and expertise. Doing this job I have successfully handled a range of tasks including probating wills; handling court cases, which include civil and criminal; issuing concealed weapons permits; handling the jury management system, just to name a few. I have gained valuable experience in being in court and video trials and have actively participated in the deputy clerk certification program. The commitment to ongoing education has allowed me to stay up to date with the latest developments in the field. Moreover, it has enabled me to establish relationships with other Circuit Court Clerks.

Mumford: I started at an entry level position and learned the skills and duties of a deputy clerk. I was promoted to Chief Deputy Clerk and have been your elected Clerk for the past 16 years. The experiences prior to being elected and all the experiences since being elected have given me a great understanding of the complexity of the office. Since becoming Clerk, I have grown, learned, failed, and triumphed in many areas. I have prepared and managed accurate budgets, successfully passed financial audits, and continue to maintain accurate court reports and data. I have been able to complete these tasks because I have the necessary understanding of the duties and requirements to fulfill them.
