LHS robotics team wins awards at Mechanicsville tournament

Lancaster High School Kinetic Storm recently competed at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville against 16 teams from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. 

The team’s robot made it all the way to the finals and came in second for its division. The team also earned a first place Connect Award for outreach to STEM professionals and a second place Control Award for their programming. 

In addition to trophies for the best performing robots, teams are able to earn awards based on the contents of their engineering portfolios, showcasing various aspects of their engineering, design and programming processes, as well as for outreach they do within their communities throughout the year. LHS Kinetic Storm will compete again in Norfolk on January 27. 

“This year the robot has to pick up hexagonal pixels and deliver them onto a slanted backdrop, navigate under a bridge, recognize a team designed element and move to the right location all by itself, launch a paper airplane to land in a designated area, and then lift and hold itself off the ground, hanging from a support beam, all while avoiding the other three robots on the field,” said Alec White.
