Build-a-Boat program making waves for 15 middle schoolers

Kids and boats go together like crabs and Old Bay. It’s a natural fit.

But kids and mathematics go together more like oil and water. They don’t mix.

Unless, that is, instructors put some fun in the fundamentals of geometry, trigonometry and physics.

And that’s what’s happening with the pilot program “Building Small Wooden Boats,” directed by the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum (RFM). Under the guise of building small wooden boats, the program teaches students everything from hydrodynamics to team building.

Adding boatbuilding to the curriculum belongs to David Clark, an RFM member. He said the program has been so popular that schools in other counties are interested….
