On Tuesday, May 25, the second annual Spring Butterfly Count was successfully held in Northumberland and Lancaster counties. Over 40 people of all ages were “lucky” to find 29 species and 483 individual butterflies.
“We report ‘lucky’ because count day began cool (62 degrees) and cloudy with occasional light drizzle; not ideal conditions for butterflies—they like 70 degrees and sunny, which the day reached about 1 p.m.,” said Kevin Howe, past president of the Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists. “But the group did better than last year, and it was fun….There's more to this story...
