Design curriculum comes of age at Chesapeake Academy

In algebra lab with Julie Duvall, Chesapeake Academy’s eighth grade students studied packaging waste, reflecting on the materials used to pack, ship and market various products.

Each student selected a product that appeared to be “over-packaged” and redesigned the packaging to reduce waste, improve the environmental sustainability of the packaging and address the particular key needs of the product, reported Duvall. 

Students considered how their products needed to be displayed, stored and used. Calculating the amount of wasted space in the original packaging offered students the means to mathematically prove that their design was more efficient.

Productive conversations among students challenged and refined….
