Hazel C. W. Johnson

KILMARNOCK–Hazel C. Woolard Johnson, 88, of Kilmarnock died peacefully on September 30 surrounded by her family.

Hazel was born on July 13, 1935, to Addie and Roy Conklin. She was raised, and lived in Lancaster County all of her life except for wintering in Florida over the last 25 years.

Hazel’s greatest accomplishment in life was raising her two children, Becky Woolard Davis (Thom), of Cuenca, Ecuador, and Carlie Woolard Jr. (Noel) of White Stone. Hazel was devoted to her children, and later became an active part in the lives of her beloved grandchildren, Jason/Emily Davis (daughters, Brooklyn and Isabella), McKinney, Texas; Jonathan Davis, Mableton, Georgia; Lydia Davis Jorden/Daniel, Shreveport, Louisiana; Taylor Woolard/Kat, Richmond; Rachel Woolard, Radford University; Lizzy Woolard, James Madison University; and Joshua Woolard, White Stone.

Hazel was a faithful member of Wesley Evangelical Church in Taylors Creek where her parents were founding members. There she served as an elder, treasurer, pianist, Sunday school teacher, choir member and in several other volunteer and compassion ministries.

Hazel worked for the Lancaster County School system as a school bus driver, and also as a dental assistant for Dr. David Helsel, DDS, in Kilmarnock before retiring.

Hazel loved boating and fishing with her husband, Norman, on the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay. They also traveled extensively throughout the United States in an RV. Hazel’s love of travel took her to many beautiful places such as Hawaii, San Francisco, Seattle, The Grand Canyon, and New England. She loved cruising to places in the Caribbean and Mexico as well as traveling to European countries such as Belgium and Holland.

Hazel was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman C. Woolard Sr.; her second husband, Leroy Johnson; her parents, Roy and Addie Conklin; her brothers and sisters, Howard Conklin, Mildred Conklin George, Ida Conklin Carter, Delma Conklin Haynie, Joyce Conklin Hughes; and by all her brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 8, at Wesley Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Weems.

In lieu of flowers, the family would kindly ask you to make donations to Wesley Evangelical Church, 70 Faith Circle, Weems, Virginia 22576.
