Huey A. Singleton

KILMARNOCK—Huey Andrew Singleton, 88 of Kilmarnock passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 31, 1936, to Effie, Sr. and Daisy Bell Catoe Singleton in Mecklenburg County.

After serving two years in the Army, Huey joined the Richmond City Police Force, where he served for 20 years. He also was enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University during his time on the force. After graduating from VCU with a master’s, Huey left the force and became a professor at John Tyler Community College, where he taught for 40 years, retiring as the program head of police science.

Huey and his family had been coming to the Northern Neck on weekends and vacations to enjoy the rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. He loved boating, motorcycle riding and enjoyed cutting grass at their home. He loved his family and friends, and will be missed by all.

Along with his parents, Huey was preceded in death by his wife, Harriette Taylor Singleton; son, Andrew Berry Singleton; and granddaughter, Clara Singleton.

He is survived by his sons, Huey Anthony Singleton (Tammy) and Michael A. Singleton (Maribeth); and daughter, Holly A. Sharp (Brandon); grandchildren, Robert Singleton, Brantley Singleton, Braelynn Singleton, Megan Guill (Dylan) and Matthew Craighead. He is also survived by brothers, Effie Singleton Jr. and Lowell Singleton.

A funeral service for Huey was held at noon on Wednesday, May 1, at Afton Methodist Church in Heathsville. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Bethel Baptist Church, 9040 Trottinridge Road, Chase City.
