Lancaster supervisors begin work on proposed $35.7 million budget

LANCASTER—The Lancaster board of supervisors on March 12 began its review of a proposed $35.7 million operating budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

County administrator Don Gill walked the board through the draft budget “which was built using the tax rates for calendar year 2019 and a 2% raise for employees. Information from the state suggests that they will be giving a 2% bonus effective December 1, 2020, to all constitutional officers and their staff,” said Gill.

Gill suggested “a one-time 2% bonus effective December 1, just like the state. That way you’re not in the situation where you give a raise and then the state jumps in midway through the year and gives a raise and you have to match it to keep everybody equalized. Compensation board employees make up 44% of total full-time employees, so if we follow what the state is doing, the county would be responsible for 56% of the full-time employees at 2%.”
