Northumberland school board votes again to reopen elementary school

HEATHSVILLE—By a 3-2 vote, the Northumberland school board on Monday reaffirmed its decision to reopen in-person learning options for children in grades pre-K through three.

“School reopening decisions are outlined by the Virginia Department of Education as well as the governor. The decision to reopen schools is a challenging topic for education leaders, school boards and public health officials. The academic and social and emotional needs of vulnerable populations and the public health risks and the capacity of schools must be constantly evaluated in a localized fashion. Northumberland County Public Schools (NCPS) continues to monitor the COVID-19 community spread and reopening plans,” superintendent Holly Wargo later said.

“In NCPS, any family (pre-K through 12) may opt for 100% virtual learning. NCPS has chosen to reopen following Phase 2 guidelines, with pre-K through third grade students invited to attend two days per week with no more than six students in a classroom,” she said.
