Refreshing recollections on Independence Day

It’s easy to get caught up in the modern celebration of the Fourth of July with its cookouts, parades and fireworks.

However, a very solemn and patriotic Independence Day observance took place at Historic Christ Church in Weems on Saturday, July 3, with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence and the singing of patriotic songs. Attendees also received flags and copies of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

It seems only fitting that these walls—which pre-date the document by 41 years—would hear those words spoken again, along with the reading of the names of the 56 signers as a reminder of….
