Native Plant Society reaches out to youth

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society recently donated a copy of Nature’s Best Hope by Doug Tallamy to the Lancaster Community Library for inclusion in the young people’s section.

Tallamy, professor of entomology at the University of Delaware, is recognized as reinvigorating the country on the benefits of including native plants into landscapes, noted former chapter president Ted Munns.

“This book is geared toward our youth. Today, it seems, that our young people are glued to their electronic modes of communication and are not experiencing the wonders of nature,” said Munns.

To encourage more students to explore the outdoors, the chapter recently announced a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a graduate from a Northern Neck high school. The awardee will be one who expresses a desire to pursue studies in the field of horticulture.
